Balm vs. Magnesium Spray vs. Penetrating Cream: Which Should You Choose?

3 min read

A balm, a magnesium spray, and a cream. If you’re looking at all three and wondering which one to bring home, there’s a good reason: they share many of the same purposeful essential oils, but the formulas—and the way you use them—are different.

Our Joint Relief Balm is the heritage formula, with beeswax and botanical oils for focused application. Joint Ease Magnesium Spray brings magnesium chloride into a lightweight, water-based formula. Penetrating Cream takes the blend in a rich, buttery direction, with 5% MSM and active vitamin B6.

There’s room for each of them. What matters is finding the one that fits the kind of care you’re looking for.

The balm: our heritage formula

Peruvian Gold Wellness Joint Relief Balm in its white tin

Joint Relief Balm starts with a blend of olive, castor, sunflower, and Amazonian sacha inchi oils, held together with beeswax. Calendula and vitamin E round out the base. It’s a concentrated balm in a 2 oz tin, made for targeted application to joints and other affected areas.

The essential oils are a functional part of that formula: peppermint, clove, laurel, cinnamon, black pepper, ginger, chamomile, juniper, and thyme. This is the traditional blend at the heart of our joint-care products.

One detail that’s easy to miss is how to apply it. With Joint Relief Balm, you use a thin layer on opposite sides of the affected area—for example, the front and back of a joint—and leave it there without rubbing it in. That’s different from the massage step you’ll use with the spray or cream.

If you like a balm you can apply exactly where you want it, this is a good place to start. Take a closer look at Joint Relief Balm.

The spray: magnesium in a lightweight format

Peruvian Gold Wellness Joint Ease Magnesium Spray bottle

Joint Ease Magnesium Spray has a very different feel from the balm. Its base is distilled water and magnesium chloride, with MSM, vitamin B6, and our purposeful blend of peppermint, clove, laurel, cassia, black pepper, ginger, chamomile, juniper, and thyme.

You’ll often hear this kind of magnesium solution called “magnesium oil.” The name can be confusing: the base is water and magnesium chloride, rather than a botanical oil like olive or sacha inchi.

The 4 fl oz spray bottle makes application straightforward. Spray onto clean skin, then massage gently into joint areas, following the product directions. If a lightweight spray fits your day better than a balm or a rich cream, this is the option to explore.

See Joint Ease Magnesium Spray for the complete ingredients and directions.

The cream: rich, buttery, and made for massage

Penetrating Cream is for the person who wants to work a product into the skin with a little massage. Sunflower oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter give it that rich, body-butter texture. A small amount goes a long way.

Alongside the traditional essential-oil blend, the formula contains 5% MSM and active vitamin B6, also called P5P. The nine essential oils are peppermint, clove, laurel, black pepper, ginger, cassia, chamomile, juniper, and thyme.

It’s a modern expression of the same purposeful approach, in a formula that suits an after-work or post-activity massage. Apply a small amount to the desired area and massage until absorbed. The current jar is 8 fl oz.

If you enjoy a creamy texture and want the massage step to be part of your routine, Penetrating Cream is worth a closer look.

So, which one would we start with?

For focused balm application, we’d start with Joint Relief Balm. For a lightweight formula with magnesium chloride, we’d look at Joint Ease Magnesium Spray. For a richer texture you can massage into the skin, we’d reach for Penetrating Cream.

You don’t need to buy all three to get started. Pick the one whose ingredients and application make the most sense for you, and follow that product’s directions.

All three contain essential oils. If what you’re really looking for is an essential-oil-free balm to care for dry skin, that’s a different conversation: our Skin Healing Balm is made for that purpose.

The full ingredient lists are on the product pages, so you can see exactly what’s in each formula before choosing. Each product is for external use.
